Outlaw
Blues
The
Outlaw Blues is a new subgenre of blues music that draws its influences
from the American Southwest, New Orleans, the Mississippi Delta,
Rockabilly and Folk Rock with an original Outlaw Beat. This is also the
music of a larger worldwide literary movement, the Outlaw Movement. The
Outlaw Movement is about artists absorbing outside influences and
recreating their art form in their own image. The lyrics originate from
Outlaw poetry while the vocal style and music are in
themselves,
Outlaw, that is a whole variety of musical influences internalized and
recreated to revitalize the sound through the persona of the artist.
The Outlaw Movement is also enhanced by the spirit of outlaw personas
such as Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and John Dillinger. Tony Moffeit
and guitarist Rick Terlep capture the musical essence of the movement
in this studio release that has been based on Tony and Rick’s
nationwide performances over the last few years. This is the Blues
“sand papered, sliced, diced, and all scratched to hell.”
The
Outlaw Blues is the blues stripped bare. The lyrics stripped
down
to Outlaw Poetry. The music stripped down to its pure
essence.
The Outlaw Blues Revolution is about a revitalization of music, a new
sound that fuses the blues with Outlaw. It is characterized
by
blues poetry; the voodoo roots of the blues; innovative and unusual
guitar work; a throbbing rhythm with its source in the conga drum, the
fingersnap, the footstomp; and an underlying philosophy of Outlaw,
based on the individual being a law unto oneself .
About
Tony
Tony
Moffeit is the blues poet from Pueblo, Colorado, who was the winner of
the prestigious Jack Kerouac Award from Cherry Valley Editions for his
volume of poetry, PUEBLO BLUES, now rare and out-of-print. He was also
the author of two other volumes from Cherry Valley Editions: LUMINOUS
ANIMAL (New Orleans poems) and NEON PEPPERS (Hank Williams poems). His
1995 volume, POETRY IS DANGEROUS, THE POET IS AN OUTLAW from Floating
Island Publications, introduced outlaw essays and some early roots of
the philosophy of Outlaw Poetry. Moffeit and poet Todd Moore founded
the Outlaw Poetry Movement from 2004 to the present through books and
chapbooks by the two poets, e-mail correspondence between them, and
poems, essays, and manifestos in publications such as ST. VITUS PRESS
AND POETRY REVIEW, POESY, SMALL PRESS REVIEW, CHIRON REVIEW, ZEN BABY,
DESERT SHOVEL REVIEW, and on www.m-etropolis.com. Moffeit is the author
of twenty additional poetry volumes, including TONY MOFFEIT: GREATEST
HITS from Pudding House (2004). He has also been the recipient of a
National Endowment for the Arts creative writing fellowship in poetry
and was the winner of the Thomas Hornsby Ferril Poetry Prize. Moffeit
performs his original blues songs and poems with guitarist Rick Terlep,
often accompanying himself on conga drum. Tony is also a visual artist
who uses a unique process of turning photographs into stunning works of
art that are an integral part of the poetry and music of the Outlaw
Movement. Tony’s artwork has been shown in several Southern Colorado
galleries and is featured on the cover of his latest CD "Outlaw Blues
Revolution".
